Enjoy the foods you love that love you back
Berries are in season but not for much longer, at least not in the New York area. So hurry and enjoy this delicious and nutrition-packed treat!
As autumn approaches, the season for berries is soon to be over. However the good news is that we can still enjoy the benefits of berries when we buy them frozen from our local health food stores. Studies have shown that frozen fruits and vegetables are just as healthful as fresh produce sold at the fresh-produce aisles in supermarkets. How can that be? Fruits and vegetables chosen for freezing tend to be picked at their peak ripeness, a time when they are most nutrient-packed. On the other hand, fruits and vegetables destined to be shipped to the fresh-produce aisles around the country, or more so around the world due to globalization, typically are picked before they are ripe, giving the less time to develop the full spectrum of vitamins and minerals. Therefore they never have the same nutrition value as if they were allowed to be fully ripened on the vine.
The bottom line is, when in season, eat your fruits and veggies fresh. During off-season, eating frozen organic fruits and vegetables will supply the highest concentration of nutrients.
To your health,
